Lisa Mitchell is not just another cutesy singer-songwriter. Her folksy sound and bittersweet lyrics make her stand out against other guitar-bearing wannabes and Libertine thinks she’s one to watch for 2010.

Yeah. Just a bit. Awkward…
So…how do you feel your music has been received so far in the UK?
Pretty good – I haven’t had to play to an empty room yet. I’ve had a few things thrown at me, but that’s nothing new.
Sounds dangerous Lisa – what kind of things have you had thrown at you?
I’ve got a song out called ‘Coin Laundry’ and the chorus is ‘Do you have a dollar, do you have a dollar…’. Back home in Australia, I always get these little coins thrown at me. It’s like I’m a wishing well or something. [Coin trivia fans: Its lucky Lisa doesn’t ask for 50 cents, the Australian version of which is the world’s heaviest coin! Fair dinkum!]
How would you categorise your musical style? Do you think your work relates to a specific ‘scene’?
To be honest, I’m probably not the most culturally up-to-date individual.
That’s OK, neither are we.
Anyway I don’t necessarily think that music should be categorized like that. It’s a little more fluent. I couldn’t even begin to tell you what ‘my scene’ was. I just…play music…I guess. And I cross my fingers that someone will like it.
Adorable. What kind of venues do you like to play at?
I really like playing at cosy venues – the kind of grassroots places which just aren’t that common anymore. I especially like places where you can see the person at the other side of the room and communicate directly.
Do you talk to the crowd?
Yeh, all the time.
Ever do a little stand up, to warm the audience?
No, not really.
But you prefer small venues.
Yeh, its just sometimes performing can be so impersonal when you’re playing to a huge crowd. I guess I just like to feel like I’m playing to people that I know – my music can be pretty subtle and I think it gets across better when the audience feels like I’ve written something for them.
How do you feel about the rise of illegal music downloading?
As a musician, all I really want is for people to hear my music. It’s a shame that illegal downloading is making the music industry even tougher, but it’s something I don’t think can be avoided. But I guess I’d rather people save money on buying tracks and use it to come see me live.
What’s your song-writing process like?
I don’t necessarily sit down and write a song. It’s more organic – you see something that makes you think and, it’s just there.
A lot of your songs present quite a romanticized vision of relationships. Do you still think that this is relevant today, or are you trying to recapture something that you think has been lost?
Even the most ‘modern’ romances are old fashioned – I mean, that ‘romantic’ ideal still exists, it’s just translated in a new way. It’s not like no-one wants that little house on a hill, with the ‘bed for three.
What does ‘a house on a hill with a bed for three’ represent exactly?
Basically…a house on a hill with a bed for three.
Who is the third person? A second wife?
No…a baby.
Oh. That makes more sense.
Yeh.
Looking through your lyrics, the ‘sea’ seems to appear quite frequently as an image. What is it about the sea that attracts you?
It’s difficult to say exactly what it is. I guess, the sea can take you places, transport you to somewhere you didn’t think you’d ever be. I like to take people places with my music, so I suppose that’s where the connection is.
In the lyrics for ‘Neapolitan dreams’, you talk about someone who’s not ‘100% in the room’. What do you mean by that?
Well, the ‘room’ represents the ‘here and now’. The song is about someone who’s not really present, someone who’s absent from what’s going on in the relationship and in the world. That’s something I find really interesting – how people can be physically ‘there’, but not really connecting with things around them. Music is one way that you can force people to think about what they’re doing.
Finally, what’s it like being 19 in the music industry? As ‘17-22’ year olds ourselves, we know it can be tough…
You have to learn very quickly, and it’s not always easy. But I guess that it forced me to sharpen up and become independent.
